The next day, on 31 December 2021, this Islamophobic advertisement was published by the Uttar Pradesh government, indicating Muslims as rioters.
Through the data, an attempt has been made to highlight the various forms of Islamophobia in Uttar Pradesh. Although Islamophobia is not new, the data reflects a sharp spike in incidents of anti-Muslim hate after the Yogi Adityanath government came into power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.
Apart from the rise in incidents of anti-Muslim hate, the data also shows how the ‘Hindutva ecosystem’ of targeted hate and violence against Muslims has shaped up over the years.
From rampant hate speeches by Ministers in power, selective targeting of madrasas and their functioning, attack on eating habits, false narratives against Muslims such as rising population and ‘love jihad’, government policies adversely impacting Muslims disproportionately, aggressive nationalism like making it mandatory to sing ‘Vande Mataram’, all of it became a tool to harass Muslims, even as there was hardly any justice for those attacked, which in turn gave further impunity to the criminals.
The COVID-19 pandemic also became a weapon to vilify Muslims. There was a rise in COVID-related fake news targeting Muslims and attacks on street vendors and those looking ‘visibly Muslim’ – leading to many people losing their jobs.
In a sociopolitical environment that enables and facilitates such bigotry against Muslims, the imbalance in the right to identity, dignity and equality of the citizens of Uttar Pradesh seems to only be deepening ever further.
