#NoCAA trends on Twitter

While Northeast Indians are storming Twitter to fight racism and be accepted as citizens of the country, another trend rose to the top today after the Twitter account for Tipu Sultan Party started a movement to trend the hashtag “#NoCAA”.

The topics of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) seem to have again risen from the ashes to be debated on the internet while the country struggles with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

After the tweets from Tipu Sultan Party, Twitterati started sharing pictures and messages, calling for the controversial bill to be taken back.

In retaliation of the #NoCAA trend, a quick rise in the number of tweets with “#India_Want_CAA” and “#India_Want_NRC” was also seen in support of the two bills.

The objective of the CAA is to grant Indian citizenship to people of minority communities of Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christians of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who had come to India till December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution in these countries.
