NEW DELHI – A video surfaced on social media on Saturday evening showing a Muslim youth being allegedly harassed by a group of Hindutva goons in the Meerut area of Western Uttar Pradesh.
Sachin Gupta, a local journalist who uploaded the video on Twitter, identified the victim as Faiz Khan who worked at a salon. Gupta said that the men who beat Khan were members of Bharatiya Janata Party’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). He wrote that they beat Khan allegedly for wearing a garland of Rudraksha, used as prayer beads in Hinduism.
The video shows goons abusing Khan and asking him why he wore the garland as they grab him by the collar. One of them shakes Khan’s moustache in a painful way. They ask him if he would recite the Geeta and Hanuman Challisa, a Hindu hymn, in a temple.
As the video went viral, the Meerut Police responded to Gupta from its official Twitter handle saying: “Legal action has been taken by the police station Kankar Kheda in the said case.”
Clarion India approached police station Kankar Khera to know what action has been taken by the police.
The in charge of the station said that they are yet to ascertain where the incident took place as they have not received any formal complaint from the salon. “The video has been uploaded on Facebook claiming it happened in Kankar Kheda and linked it with a salon incident but we have not received any application from the man who is being beaten,” the officer said.
“We are trying to find where the incident took place and once we get to know we will definitely take action.”
