An interfaith couple was on their way to register their marriage when they were attacked by a group of right-wing Hindutva goons alleging ‘love jihad’ in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district on Wednesday.

Mohammed Rehan and Pragathi who have been in a relationship for the past two years were going to a district court to register their marriage when they were surrounded and harassed by a mob. The couple were halted outside the district registrar’s office and were thrashed  by several men from Hindutva outfits.

Reports suggest that Pragathi was wearing a burqa which angered the mob more who accused Rehan of love jihad as they dragged him from his bike while Pragathi tried to stop and save him. Rehan escaped to save himself from the mob leaving Pragathi alone as the mob surrounded her. Police reached the stop and took her to the Kakori police station where she registered an FIR.

Speaking to the local media, Pragathi expressed shock and said, “We were exercising our legal right to marry and the constitution promises us this.”

So far, no individual has been apprehended for attacking the couple. Official statement from police is awaited.
