Three persons were killed on Saturday (April 12, 2025) in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district as violent protests over The Waqf (Amendment) Bill continues to rage in certain parts of the State. “Two deaths have been reported in communal clashes. One person who was injured in the firing yesterday in Suti has died a short while ago,” a senior police official told The Hindu.
Two persons of the same family father Hargobind Das and son Chandan Das were hacked to death at Dhulian in Shamsherganj, allegedly by a mob . A 17-year-old youth Izaz Ahmed Sheikh who sustained bullet injuries in a police firing on Friday at Suti, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while appealing for restraint said that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will not be implemented in the State.
“Remember, we did not make the law that many are agitating against. The law was made by the central government. Therefore, the answer that should be sought from the central government. We have made our statement on this matter clear – we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So why are their riots ?” Ms. Banerjee said on social media.
The Chief Minister accused some political parties are trying to misuse religion for political gain. “Don’t fall into their trap ..Everyone should maintain peace and harmony – this is my appeal,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court directed the deployment of central armed police forces (CAPF) in violence affected areas of Murshidabad. A division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury said that High Court cannot close its eyes to the developments that have been brought before the Court.
