The Salem City police on Thursday (December 5, 2024) booked 156 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers on charges of unlawful assembly.
The BJP and RSS workers had staged a protest against the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, at Maravaneri on Wednesday (December 4, 2024). More than 100 people had participated in the protest and raised slogans.
Based on a complaint from S. Rajasekar, Periyeri Village Administration Officer (VAO), who alleged that the group assembled at the site unlawfully, staged the demonstration without permission, and obstructed vehicle movement, the Hasthampatti police registered a case under Sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly) and 126(2) (wrongful restraint) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
