A dargah in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar was demolished on Saturday by the district authorities who claimed it had been constructed illegally.
The authorities claimed that the dargah, in Garh Meerpur village, was constructed between 15 to 20 years ago and had been served a demolition notice in March.
Rao Zubair, the former head of the Mirpur gram panchayat, said the demolition on Saturday came in response to complaints from some locals.
Between May and August of 2023, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Bharatiya Janata Party government demolished 465 dargahs. The demolished also include 45 temples and a gurdwara.
The Muslim communities in the state have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government of selectively targeting their shrines under the guise of removing encroachments from public land.
