A Muslim man was killed and 17 others injured in North Tripura’s Kadamtala, after a violent clash erupted over a Durga Puja subscription on Sunday. The dispute escalated quickly, leading to vandalism and looting, with several shops being set ablaze during the unrest.
The deceased was identified as Alfesani, a shop owner who is in his thirties.
Unnamed sources told Maktoob that the violence broke out between two communities, reportedly after a disagreement over a Durga Puja contribution. “Clashes happened when some individuals refused to contribute to the Durga Puja subscription,” they said. “It was two men and one woman [all Muslims] and they were beaten by the group of people who were seeking charity which ended up into a communal clash.”
When tensions boiled over, North Tripura police intervened with lathi charges and eventually opened fire to restore order. “A Muslim man was killed during the firing and many were injured,” the sources said. “The police resorted to aerial firing to restore order but Alfesani, who has a shop in Kadamtala market, was shot in the head and got killed. He had gone to protect it [during the clashes].”
