A day after Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal staged a protest at Ganpat University as videos of students purportedly offering namaaz on campus surfaced, the university located in Kherva, Mehsana, issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the students in the video were new and unaware of the rules.

Videos of students purportedly offering namaaz on the campus of the private university surfaced earlier this week following which, on Tuesday, VHP and Bajrang Dal members staged a protest by reciting Hanuman Chalisa and Ram Dhun, and sprinkled “gau mutra” outside its gates.

“When VHP and Bajrang Dal members learnt about this incident from local students who had protested against the namaaz being offered, they reached the campus to join the protesters. We are protesting against such religious practices like offering namaaz within the premises of the educational institute,” Hitendrasinh Rajput, VHP spokesperson, told The Indian Express.

Videos of the protest too went viral.

University spokesperson Bhikhesh Bhatt issued a video statement Wednesday, saying, “There was an incident of some new students offering namaaz on the university campus. It is possible that they were not aware of the university’s rules and regulations…We have assured them (Bajrang Dal and VHP) that we did not know about the case. The students were new but we will be careful in future.” The issue has been resolved now, he added.
