The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday named Sunil Sangwan, whose tenure as Sunaria jail superintendent saw rape and murder convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim released six times on parole or furlough, in its first list of 67 candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections.
Sangwan, the son of former Haryana minister Satpal Sangwan, will contest the polls from the Charkhi Dadri constituency.
The Haryana government on Sunday expedited the process of accepting his application for voluntary retirement from the post of superintendent at the Gurugram district jail, and he joined the Hindutva camp the next day, on Monday.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in 2017 for raping two of his women disciples at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa district. In 2021, he and four others were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of Ranjit Singh, a former manager of his sect.
Currently out of jail for 21 days on furlough, Ram Rahim Singh has been in the news for his repeated paroles and furloughs. Of the 10 occasions in which Ram Rahim Singh was on parole or furlough, six were when Sangwan was superintendent of the jail where the Dera chief was kept in custody, The Print reported.
