Police have arrested two individuals, including a young woman, on charges of ‘forcible conversion and fraud’ following a complaint by a local woman. The complainant alleged that her daughter had been ‘brainwashed and coerced’ into converting to Islam.

According to the police, the woman from Vitthalwadi in Thane district reported that her daughter was influenced by a neighbouring family who showed her videos of a ‘controversial Islamic preacher’. The daughter renounced Hinduism and converted to Islam in June 2022 while the complainant was in London. The woman also claimed that her daughter went missing after the conversion.

The complainant further said that she had received a letter from the Ulhasnagar and Ambarnath Mosque Trust confirming her daughter’s conversion. She also alleged that after converting, her daughter withdrew money from her father’s account and claimed that her daughter might be forced into illegal activities due to brainwashing.

An official stated, “The woman has also said that after the conversion, her daughter withdrew money from her father’s account. She tells us that her daughter has been brainwashed and may be forced to participate in illegal activities.”

The police have arrested the complainant’s daughter and another accused in connection with the case.

“The complainant’s daughter has been arrested along with one more person, while eight are absconding. The duo was produced in court today and were remanded in police custody for three days. Further probe into the case is underway,” the Vitthalwadi police said.
