Background: Clashes Erupt in Medak Over Bakrid Sacrificial Animals

Tensions escalated in Medak district, Telangana, following disputes over Minhaj ul Uloom Madrasa’s procurement and intended sacrifice of oxen for Bakrid. Allegations from right-wing factions claiming the animals were cows provoked strong objections, leading to confrontations and resulting in injuries and property damage.

The unrest persisted as mobs targeted Muslims and their properties, including the vandalization of Orthopedic Hospital Medak. While the initial police response was slow, subsequent arrests were made which helped stabilize the situation. Nevertheless, concerns remain regarding the ongoing detention of sacrificial animals, despite appeals from the Muslim community for their release. So far, 27 individuals have been arrested from both sides. The fact-finding team of the Association for the Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) reached Medak to understand the situation on the ground and how the violence unfolded. This report is based on our team’s on-ground analysis and interaction with individuals, reporters, and eyewitnesses.
