Noting that the testimony of one of the police witnesses was not very “convincing”, the court noted that the ASI “remained silent” and didn’t take action for 10 months despite knowing the names and addresses of the culprits.
Noting inconsistencies in the statements of two police witnesses, a Delhi Court on Thursday acquitted 11 men accused of rioting, arson and unlawful assembly during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.
It was observed by the court that the police witnesses — two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) — had said that the shop of a witness was set on fire, but the witness, also the owner of the shop, deposed that his establishment was never burnt. The court noted that only these two ASIs had identified the accused, while three other witnesses had not supported the case of the prosecution.
