The High Court of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday granted bail to the administrators of a private school located in Damoh months after a massive row over students wearing hijab. The court emphasised that individuals should not hinder students from wearing items essential to their respective religions.
Earlier in May this year, a dispute arose when Ganga Jamuna Higher Secondary School in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, displayed a poster featuring top-performing students from Class 10 and 12 state board exams. The poster depicted all female students wearing headscarves, even though not all of them were Muslims. This led to a protest by a faction linked to the right-wing Bajrang Dal within the school premises, during which the Hanuman Chalisa was recited.
The incident caused a significant political uproar in Madhya Pradesh, which was heading into elections, and the ruling BJP demanded strict action against the school administration.
Consequently, the state government revoked the school’s recognition.
