New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday finally arrested militant Hindu priest Bajrang Muni Das of the Maharishi Shri Laxman Das Udasi Ashram, eleven days after he threatened mass sexual violence against Muslim women in Sitapur.
According to news agency PTI, additional director general of police (law and order) Prashant Kumar said Muni was arrested in Sitapur.
Das, formerly known as Anupam Mishra, is the mahant of the Maharshi Shri Lakshman Das Udaseen Ashram in the Khairabad town of Sitapur. In a speech on April 2, the Hindu new year, he could be heard making rape threats in the presence of policemen.
In the two-minute video of the inciting speech made outside a mosque, Das could be heard using the term “jehadi” to refer to the Muslim community and threatening them that if any Hindu girl is “harassed”, he would himself “rape their women”.
The Wire has reported that Muni is a serial offender who has repeatedly called not just for sexual violence against Muslim women but also issued calls to kill Muslims. He is also connected to at least three organisers or speakers of the Haridwar Dharma Sansad, where calls for genocide of Muslims were made.
