Ahmedabad: A total of 503 religious structures, which were illegally built on public places, have been removed across the state in the last month, the state govt told the Gujarat high court on Monday.
The HC and Supreme Court had ordered the removal of all religious constructions illegally put up on public places. This was in response to a photograph of a temple in Ahmedabad published by TOI in 2006 after riots broke out in Vadodara, when three mazars were razed by the civic body.The govt submitted that of 503 religious constructions that were demolished, 263 structures were in district areas and 267 in municipal corporation areas.
The authorities have regularized two such structures while 28 religious places have been relocated — 17 in district areas and 11 in cities. The bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi asked why all such structures cannot be relocated. Advocate general Kamal Trivedi replied that there is a problem of space because such structures cannot be taken far from their original site.
