About 50,000 people from Dalit Hindu communities are expected to convert into Buddhism at an event to be held in the Gujarat capital on Ambedkar Jayanti next Friday, its organisers said.
The Swayam Sainik Dal (SSD), a Rajkot-based Dalit organisation, is also expecting more than 1,00,000 people to attend the programme, including a rally, it has organised on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar. Speaking to ET, Dhaval Solanki from the SSD said the organisation so far had confirmation on about 50,000 people who would be renouncing Hinduism and embracing Buddhism on that day.
“People are coming from all over the country and, of course, from all the corners of Gujarat,” Solanki said. Such events of mass conversions shall now be held in other major cities with Delhi being the next likely venue, he said. “We shall continue organising these events on Baba Saheb‘s birth and death anniversary as well as other days of significance in the Dalit calendar,” he added…
