Coimbatore: Tension prevailed at Kuniyamuthur here on Sunday night after a group of right-wing cadres assaulted a Muslim youth. Police arrested four of the six-member gang on Monday.
Police said around 8.30pm on Sunday, H Ashik Ali, 26, of Kurinji Nagar in Kuniyamuthur, was waiting in a corner on Eight Street at Ganga Nagar in Kuniyamuthur when a six- member gang questioned him, resulting in a quarrel. Subsequently, the gang assaulted Ashik with a wooden log.
Members from a Muslim outfit, of which Ashik’s father is a part of, gathered at the spot, demanding action against the accused. Deputy commissioner of police G Chandeesh and team rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitators.
