Patna: Three boys from the Dalit community were allegedly subjected to torture and harassment by a group of persons in Gaya, Bihar. The three boys were allegedly stripped, thrashed and paraded in a village over suspicion of stealing batteries from a local shop.
The inhuman treatment was meted out to the trio on the instruction of the local panchayat. The incident, that took place on Saturday, surfaced on Sunday after a video of the same went viral on social media.
Victims asked to do sit-ups, run around in circle
In the video, the victims could be seen forced to do sit-ups, run around in circles while the locals held up their phones and filmed the assault. After the assault, there was a ruckus in the village but it was controlled after a meeting between community leaders.
Senior police superintendent of Gaya, Aditya Kumar said that a special investigation team was formed by them to probe the incident. The team is led by police superintendent Rakesh Kumar, Hindustan Times reported.
Accused, including shop owner nabbed by cops after investigation
After investigation, the police arrested Mohammad Sheru Alam, the shop owner Mohammad Zinnat, Mohammad Tezu, Amarjeet Singh, Mohammad Nasir, and Mohammad Akhtar for their involvement in the incident.
The accused were booked under section 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with sections of the Information Technology Act, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
