A 26-year-old Muslim, Litan Miah, was lynched by a Hindu mob on Tuesday morning in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

Two people Sentu Debnath (40) and Amal Chandra Das (50) were arrested in connection with the killing of Miah, a resident of Tarapukur in Jatrapur police station area of Sonamura subdivision, police said.

“We have arrested two, Sentu Debnath (40) and Amal Chandra Das (50) for mercilessly killing Litan Miah,” Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Sonamura Banoj Biplab Das said to ANI. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder), they said.

The Hindu mob while beating Miah, alleged that Miah went to the village to lift cows for smuggling. The police said that they failed to get any evidence supporting the allegations of the assailants.

“On reaching there, we found that the man was seriously injured. We took prompt action and shifted him to a local hospital”, OC Jatrapur police station Nandan Das told ANI.

Jamal Miah, the father of the deceased Muslim youth, lodged a complaint following which the two accused were arrested.

Meanwhile, soon after the incident, hundreds of locals blocked the road at Dhanpur demanding the immediate arrest of the people involved in the crime.

Mob killings, mainly Hindu mob lynchings of Muslims now seem to have become very normal in the northeast state with more than a dozen cases of brutal lynching have been reported in the last five years.

In June last year, four Muslim youth, identified as Billai Mia (27), Zayed Hussain (28) Saiful Islam (21), and Salim Hussain were branded cattle thieves by a Hindu mob before the trio were brutally beaten up and lynched by the mob in Khowai district in Tripura.
